Offshore Roustabout Jobs

When I first started looking around at oil rig jobs it was just because I needed a job – any job.  The company I had been working for had to lay a bunch of people off, and I was one of them.  I had a couple of buddies who had rigging jobs and they suggested I give it a try.  So I started sending out resumes looking for any rig jobs that might be available.

Well, little did I know that it takes a lot more than a resume to be considered for those oil rig jobs.    I must have sent a resume to every oil company on the planet.  I bet I also talked to every roustabout hiring agency, too.  In fact, I got to know some of them so well, they call me by my first name.  I found out the hard way that you don’t just walk in off the street and get an oil rig job.  The competition is tough!

 And why not?  The pay is fantastic – some of the jobs start at $50,000 to $60,000 a year.  And the benefits are outstanding!  You’re basically living in a hotel for two weeks and the company pays for just about everything – including some of your laundry.  The meals are even included on the rigging jobs and let me tell you, it beats MY cooking.

It’s not for everyone, though.  Sometimes I have to climb clear up to the top of the rig, but it’s a beautiful view.  And by the end of the day you’re very grimy and dirty, but it washes off.  And the one major drawback is you have to work fourteen days straight, sometimes more, with  no time off.  But then you get 2 or 3 weeks in a row off to do whatever you please.  Just like a vacation.  With benefits like that, it’s no wonder everybody wants one of the oil rig jobs.
